Urban and Suburban Growth by the numbers

We’ve written before how the latest population trends have more people moving into cities.  The urban areas are seeing the most growth with the closest suburban counties are getting less and exurban counties are seeing very little to no growth.  Now the Brookings Institute and Atlantic Cities have a handy graph showing the numbers across the U.S.   We’re most interested in Atlanta, of course which shows a 2.4% increase in the city versus a 1.1% growth rate in the suburbs.

Atlanta’s population trends mirror the nation’s

According to recent US Census Bureau estimates Atlanta is seeing continued population growth.  But now the growth is more inside the city and immediate surrounding counties.  In the not too distant past mos of our growth was going to the outlying exurban areas.  Those counties have slowed their growth as more people move closer to urban areas.  We’re seeing this trend nationally and  worldwide.  In Atlanta people are moving closer due to various factors including higher energy prices.  Even the closer counties like Gwinnett and Cobb say population growth that was 26% lower than Fulton and Dekalb counties between 2010 and 2011.  It’s good news for Atlanta and it’s good news for the real estate market here.  For more details you can check out this excellent article from the Atlanta Business Chronicle or check out the numbers at the census bureau’s web site.
